Constructing a Dam Near a Council Controlled Road or Reserve
The construction of dams is handled by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM).
The only time additional approval is required from Council is when a dam
and its discharge encroach to within 20 metres of a road reserve which is under
Council’s control. In this case, you will need to seek Council's approval via letter.
The letter of application is to be accompanied by map (preferably from mapping program) of proposed location of the dam.
NOTE: If a dam wall is 10 metres or more in height and its capacity is more than
20,000 m3, or the dam wall is 5 metres or more in height and its capacity is more than 50,000 m3, then the application is to be forwarded to DNRM for their approval.
