Council hosts inspirational Australia Day Ambassador

Award winning storyteller and poet Nerelie Teese will bring her love of rural life and the bush to the Southern Downs when she joins residents to celebrate Australia Day.

Warwick and Stanthorpe will host the well-known author, educator and bush poet at their Australia Day Celebrations, where Ms Teese will share some of her original work as their special guest and the region’s official Australia Day Ambassador.

Southern Downs Regional Council will host free Australia Day events at Glengallan Homestead from 8am until midday and Stanthorpe’s Weeroona Park from 3.30pm until 9.00pm on Friday, January 26.

Ms Teese is just one of 300 Australia Day Ambassadors who will volunteer their time to take part in celebrations in hundreds of local communities across the Australia.

Past recipients of the Australian of the Year Awards, Ambassadors give the local community the opportunity to meet and listen to Australians who have distinguished themselves by their contribution to their country.

Ms Teese spent her early years on a dairy farm near Echuca in Victoria before her family relocated to Beaudesert. Her love for writing and country life eventually led her to write and publish two local history books.

A coordinator of the international literacy project, Books Through the Seas, Ms Teese has been instrumental in sourcing books for school and community libraries in the Philippines.

SDRC Mayor Tracy Dobie said she is delighted to welcome Ms Teese as the region’s Australia Day Ambassador.

“I encourage all residents to take part in Australia Day celebrations across the region and to take the opportunity to be inspired by our special guest,” Cr Dobie said.

“Australia Day is a time to come together as a community to celebrate national identity and pride and our wonderful region. I’m thrilled Ms Teese will be on hand to share her stories and poetry and to help us reflect on what it means to be Australian.”
