Tech Savvy Seniors Classes Back at Southern Downs Libraries in 2018

The Southern Downs Library Service is pleased to announce that it will be running further training sessions this year, as part of the 2017/2018 Tech Savvy Seniors Queensland grant program.

The Tech Savvy program is a partnership between the Queensland Government (led by the State Library of Queensland) and Telstra, and is aimed at enabling older people – particularly those in regional and remote areas of Queensland – to develop the skills and confidence to use technology for socialising, accessing important services or conducting personal business.  Digital literacy skills are increasingly essential for anyone who wants to actively engage with family and friends across the country and the world, and the program is committed to ensuring that everyone can benefit from being online and connected in the digital age.

SDRC libraries’ 2017/2018 Tech Savvy program has already given nearly 200 seniors the opportunity to embrace information technology and improve their digital skills, with free training sessions on computer basics, the internet, utilising laptops, tablets and iPads, email and social media, cyber safety, and – for the first time – smartphones.

The program this year will begin in February 2018, with sessions held at the Warwick and Stanthorpe libraries.  The small, friendly group sessions are facilitated by an IT professional and provide a forum where you can learn new skills to help you get connected and take the first steps to becoming tech savvy.  The training is designed to make it easy for you to learn at your own pace to develop the skills and confidence necessary to actively participate in the digital community.

Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie encouraged all seniors who would like to learn more about technology to attend the training program. “It can be daunting to learn how to use technology, but there are some wonderful benefits,” said Cr Dobie. “We know that social isolation is a big risk factor for developing depression and anxiety in older Australians, and learning to use technology is an important tool in combating that risk.”

For more information about the training courses, call Warwick Library (4661 0342) or Stanthorpe Library (4681 2141).  Please note, bookings can only be made two weeks in advance of the course date.  A light morning or afternoon tea is also provided.

The Tech Savvy Seniors Queensland program has been funded by Telstra and the Queensland Government through State Library of Queensland and Department of Communities.
