Programs for Sports & Recreation Organisations Open

In the aftermath of ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie, the Southern Downs region was declared under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements. As a result, the Minister for Housing and Public Works and the Minister for Sport, the Hon. Mick de Brenni, MP, announced that two programs would open aimed at financially assisting not-for-profit sports and recreation organisations.

 Under the Get Going Clubs program, local or regional level not-for-profit sport or recreation organisations can receive up to $7500 to create and provide access to participation opportunities for locals.

 The Playing Places and Spaces program assists local sport and recreation organisations with the development of places so that local residents are encouraged to become involved in sport and active recreation. The maximum funding available to organisations has increased to $150,000 to help clubs with the costs of building infrastructure.

The programs support sport and recreation at the grassroots level.

Both programs will open for applications from 19 June 2017 and will close on 11 August 2017. The Minister has asked for the assessment process to be expedited so projects may commence from 1 November 2017.

 Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie says the social, emotional and physical benefits of becoming involved in sport and recreation shouldn’t be underestimated. “These programs offer great opportunities to local sports and recreation organisations.  Whether it’s for new equipment, new uniforms or construction, I encourage all eligible organisations to apply for funding.”
