New Highway Taskforce hits the road

A new joint local government taskforce spearheaded by Southern Downs Regional Council, will lobby for the upgrade of the New England and Cunningham highways.

Representatives from Scenic Rim Regional Council (SRRC) and Tenterfield Shire Council (TSC) joined Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) at its Chambers in Warwick yesterday to begin discussions about the importance of much-needed upgrades to the New England and Cunningham highways, which run through the three local government areas.

The Highway Taskforce was established following a resolution by Southern Downs Regional Council at its General Meeting on 26 October 2016. Invitations were extended to several neighbouring local governments to be involved, with SRRC and TSC answering the call.

Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said she was pleased to welcome representatives to the inaugural taskforce meeting, including Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen and Director Infrastructure Services, Patrick Murphy, and Tenterfield Shire Cr Gary Verri and Chief Operating Officer, Andre Kompler.

“Yesterday’s meeting enabled the Taskforce to set the scene and explore opportunities for advocacy to State and Federal Governments as a combined group of councils.

“We have some shared issues and aspirations relating to these two highways. These include road safety design concerns and known blackspots, the increasing volume of heavy vehicles and road freight activity and the impact on the safety of residents, pedestrians and passenger vehicles, and how upgrades could enhance opportunities for growth and development of our regions.

“Today was the first step forward for the taskforce in developing our advocacy plan, but there is much work yet to be done. Southern Downs Regional Council looks forward to working closely with both Scenic Rim and Tenterfield to further our joint interests in these highway improvements for the benefit of our respective communities into the long term,” said Cr Dobie.

The next meeting of the Highway Taskforce is scheduled to be held in November 2017.
