Be Bold, Be Brave, Be You this Southern Downs Youth Week

There won't be a moment to spare during the Southern Downs Youth Week in 2017. National Youth Week in Australia runs March 31 – April 9. However, with so many amazing events and activities on offer for young people in the Southern Downs, the calendar of events will run for three weeks from March 24 –April 13. Activities will include laser skirmish, youth music showcase, rock climbing, art activities, YMCA WIRAC’s Youth Festival, Southern Downs Youth Expo and Concert, and many more indoor and outdoor activities across the region (please see our Calendar of Events for more information).

National Youth Week is an annual, week-long celebration of young people (aged 12–25) throughout Australia. It is an important opportunity to celebrate the achievements, vitality and strength of young people and to acknowledge their positive contribution to our communities.

Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC), Southern Downs Industry Education Association (SDIEA), headspace Warwick, YMCA WIRAC and CDS Stanthorpe have partnered again to stage National Youth Week events, encompassing the 2017 Queensland theme ‘Be Bold, Be Brave, Be You’.

The 2017 headline event is the Southern Downs Youth Expo and Concert on April 6 at YMCA WIRAC, 29 Palmerin St Warwick. The Expo will provide a one-stop-shop opportunity for young people in the Southern Downs to access a range of youth services and activities. There will be health, sport & recreation, education, and training & employment stalls. The day program will include service/organisation booths, Music Hip Hop demo, food stalls, activities, FREE access to the pool and rock wall and much more. At 6pm the Concert will kick off featuring the Fern Brothers and band Chasing The Fence (and more). Entry is $5 per person. Young people (12-25 years) have the opportunity to gain FREE entry to the concert by visiting five stalls or activities at the Expo during the day and receiving five expo dollars to the Concert. The Expo Committee is providing an opportunity for all young people across the region to take part and will run a bus from Stanthorpe to Warwick for the Expo/Concert. Please register your interest for the bus with SDIEA (4667 0420), and for more information please contact Hailey Cosh Rickard (1300 697 372) or Grace Smith (4667 0420).

Southern Downs Regional Council’s Mayor Tracy Dobie said Council was pleased to support National Youth Week and encouraged people to be involved and to hear the voice of young people in the region.

“This year’s calendar of events for National Youth Week on the Southern Downs offers something for young people of all ages. It has been a collaborative effort by many partners to bring, what will hopefully prove to be, another exciting and successful program for young people in our region,” she said.
