Anzacs remembered in services across the Southern Downs

ANZAC Day remembrance ceremonies will be held throughout the Southern Downs region on Tuesday, 25 April 2017.

Commemorative services have seen increased support in recent years and participating in these special services is of great personal importance to Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie, who served in the Australian Army.

“I’m very proud to see the community take the time to commemorate our diggers at ANZAC Day services across the region.

“ANZAC Day is a significant time to reflect on the 1915 Gallipoli landing and those brave souls who died in the service of their country.

“However, it is equally important to remember the sacrifices made by servicemen and women who have died during their service in the years since,” she said.

Cr Dobie highlighted that numerous services have been organised throughout the region by the Returned Services League, the Veteran Services & Advocacy Services Australia and Southern Downs Regional Council, to enable all community members the flexibility to select a service that best suits their timetable.

“The customary services are being held, including dawn services in Warwick and Stanthorpe, ceremonies at the War Graves Cemetery and Eden Gardens Memorial Park, and a march before the 11am service at the Cenotaph in Leslie Park.

“A similar program of ANZAC Day services has been arranged for the Stanthorpe community, beginning with the dawn service, the parade, and the civil service again being held at the Stanthorpe RSL Club.

“Services will also be held in many of the smaller communities around the Southern Downs region including Allora, Killarney, Tannymorel, Yangan, Emu Vale, Leyburn, Pratten and Wallangarra.

“I am honoured to take part in services dedicated to those who demonstrated qualities of endurance, courage and comradery, and I would encourage residents to support these events.

"These ceremonies are also an important way to include our young people, to ensure that the legend and the spirit of ANZAC continue to resonate for future generations,” said Cr Dobie.

The Mayor, Deputy Mayor and all Councillors will attend and lay wreaths at various services across the region and look forward to standing with the community to remember the fallen.
